“Today’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is a reminder of how far we’ve come as a nation since its founding, but also of the challenges Americans face today to realize the promise of equality and opportunity for all. The hard fought rights that Americans of all backgrounds strengthened over the course of generations are under attack today. An extreme agenda driven straight from the White House has placed communities from Minneapolis to Donna, Texas under siege as Latinos – including U.S. citizens – are targeted by masked federal agents simply because of how they look, and with no regard for the Fourth Amendment’s protections against unreasonable search and seizure. Our nation’s social safety net, including healthcare, has been severely gutted to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. At the same time the rules are being changed in the middle of the game, with gerrymandering right here in Texas that is intended to promote one party rule and to suppress the voices of diverse communities. We can do better. The dream that Dr. King spoke of more than 60 years ago is far from realized but also still achievable. Here in South Texas, throughout the Rio Grande Valley where  I was born and raised, we still believe in the ‘unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ I’m running for Congress because we can still elect leaders who fight for our communities and who stand up for an America that lives up to its promise, while embracing Dr. King’s call to ‘forever conducting our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.’ I’m running because the dream is up to us to achieve, and a better future for all of us – with affordable health care, a living wage, and better jobs – is within reach.”
