Dr. Ada Cuellar Statement on ICE Shooting of U.S. Citizen
AUSTIN, TX - Dr. Ada Cuellar issued the following statement on today’s shooting of a U.S. citizen by ICE in Minneapolis:
“Today’s tragedy in Minneapolis is a reminder that Donald Trump lied when he said his administration would focus on criminals, and that even U.S. citizens have been put in danger by the culture of intimidation Trump promoted at DHS and ICE. This is not the first U.S. citizen shot by ICE/CBP, and it’s not the first case where there are serious questions about the official statements coming out of DHS. This Administration is putting federal law enforcement in a very difficult position, but that doesn’t absolve Agents and Officers from the responsibility they have to respect the law, to do their jobs professionally, and to respect the rights of those they interact with. We can secure our borders and enforce immigration laws without violating the civil rights and civil liberties of migrants and U.S. citizens alike, and without pitting federal law enforcement against the communities that pay their salaries. Congress has a role, but with the majority in the hands of Trump puppets like Monica De La Cruz, they aren’t doing their jobs. That must change next November.”
